  • The Museum of Prehistory in Lussac-les-Châteaux
An invitation to take a journey to the heart of prehistory and engraving...
This new “Museum of France” is dedicated to local prehistory and in particular to the Upper Palaeolithic; it is an essential gateway to discovering the region’s prehistory.
Discover the life of the people of Lussac in the Palaeolithic through their environment, their way of life, their technical and artistic skills.
There are five museum spaces: archaeological discoverers and discoveries; Man’s environment in the Palaeolithic; the evidence of human occupation in the Lussac region; the life of the Men of Bois-Ragot; Man and Art.
Bones, tools, weapons, and ornaments and objects for use in the home engraved on bone and limestone are on display. Most unusual and remarkable amongst these objects are the stones engraved with animals and particularly those with human figures, which are handled in a realistic way; thousands of these were discovered in the only cave in the March that has evidence of human occupation in the Magdalenian period.
You can take part in the Museum's activities: you and your whole family can make a prehistoric engraving, or there are the “Prehisto' workshops” designed especially for children.
All year round, temporary exhibitions also give shape to the life of this museum.
Tips for the Sud-Vienne-Poitou: whilst visiting the museum, take the opportunity to visit the media library.
That little extra something : the "Cave Museum" visit that will take you to the caves where the engravings were discovered.
