The Sénéchaussée Garden: an extraordinary place
The acquisition of the Sénéchalerie, the Vieux Palais and the vast garden in 2013 made it possible to renovate these spaces and to open the garden to the public.
The Sénéchaussée Garden, which is ideally located in the town centre close to the “Cité de l'Écrit” and the Tourist Information Office, covers 5000m² of outstanding terrain.
This garden, located along the river Gartempe, is protected by its status as a Historic Monument.
Initially regarded as a formal garden, it was also a kitchen garden, with old photographs showing the presence of flowers and fruit trees.
During its renovation, the owner wished to respect the initial layout whilst at the same time making a number of improvements: for example, the boxwood paths were replaced by flowering borders, rose gardens, and covered walkways featuring arbours and pergolas.
Tips for the Sud-Vienne-Poitou: whilst exploring the gardens, members of the public can take the opportunity to visit one of its outbuildings, which contains a fresco painted around 1550. Restoration work has revealed mysterious patterns...
That little extra something : there are several themed areas for you to enjoy, such as the graphic space and the spring flowers area with its delicious scents...
