“From forges to chapels”
Throughout history, people have prayed and worked by the sweat of their brows…
Traditional human activities evolved on the banks of the Vienne.
An abundance of iron ore deposits, wood from the forests transformed into fuel by the charcoal burners, the springs supplying the ponds with water, the power of the water turning the wheels in the ironworks… these constitute the many elements required to establish a metal-working industry. The fusion of the materials (earth and fire) produced objects of pleasure and also work implements and blades, etc.
Aerial photographs demonstrate the presence of a number of sites where minerals were extracted and where iron was produced and smelted from ancient times and throughout the Middle Ages. The Goberté forge at GOUEX was operational during the 17th century until the Verrières forge took over in the 18th century. They are both silent now; however, some vestiges of this industry are still visible.
For a long time, this passion resulted in events and festivities which are still fresh in the memories of older members of the population. These gatherings died out in the mid-20th century, although the traditions quietly continue in the form of individually organised trips.
