  • From crosses to priories (prieurés)…
In the 11th century, Sir Audebert of La Trimouille gave the Villesalem lands to the hermits of Fontgombault; this was the beginning of an enduring relationship between La Trimouille and what was to become a priory belonging to the Order of Fontevrault, destined to be ravaged by the vicissitudes of history. In the Middle Ages, two religious communities lived there side by side: the monks in the monastery and the nuns in the convent close to the church. In the Classical period, these buildings housed les dames de Villesalem (“the ladies of Villesalem”) and their pupils: in fact the daughters of the local aristocracy were educated by these nuns. Following the turmoil of the Revolution, the church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix was used as a farm building. Its restoration was begun by the State in 1962; its scars have been healed, and this monument, a jewel of Poitou Romanesque architecture, has sumptuous Romanesque sculptures that will delight visiting walkers. Evidence of the importance of religion in this region can be seen in the many wayside crosses and priories – and sometimes merely in the place names: Villesalem and Prieuré Saint-Jean de Journet, Prieuré Saint-Maixent in Haims, Plaine de la Chapelle ...

This circuit is one of 15 circuits known collectively as "Les Chemins de Villesalem", located in the La Trimouille, Journet, Haims and Béthines area.
