Long regarded as demons or the sources of curses, wolves were regarded as pests to be hunted to extinction; present in large numbers in the valley of the Vienne, for years this mammal was hunted down in order to safeguard the population. The first measures to combat wolves were undertaken by Charlemagne in the year 813. Beats were organised and attended by peasant farmers from the surrounding villages, in order to considerably reduce the numbers of these animals.
As the victims of curses, wolves feature in a number of fairytales, legends, and fables which remain fresh in our minds. Although wolves were often associated with evil, there were also wolf charmers (meneurs de loup), believed by rural communities to possess magical powers capable of calming, mesmerising and commanding obedience from these terrifying animals before disappearing with them into the depths of the woods….
A central preoccupation of daily life, wolves feature in a number of place names that still bear witness to their encounters with villagers. For example, in the canton of LUSSAC-LES-CHATEAUX there are two sites known as “La Fosse aux Loups”.
Between PERSAC and “Bagneux”, wolves were obviously in the habit of coming to drink at the pool that our ancestors thus named “La Fosse aux Loups”. But it is equally possible that this site served as a trap for these animals, since in former times pools were also used as a means to capture wolves.
This circuit is one of 6 circuits known collectively as "La Fosse aux Loups", located in the Lussac-les-Châteaux and Persac area.
