The Roc d’Enfer (“Hell’s Rock”) and Saint “Rô” are this footpath’s main points of interest. They attract all sorts of people for very different reasons.
At the Roc d’Enfer, you need to hear the ancient legend of the Roc… It dates back to the Middle Ages and tells the story of lords with tragic destinies. The rich and beautiful Théoline of Le Cluzeau, and the strong, handsome Gréor de Nemond, Lord of Lenet, fell in love. But Alain of Mandreux took advantage of Gréor’s absence to seize the beautiful heiress…
On his return, the two men fought one another and, just as Alain was about to deal a fatal blow to his adversary, Théoline tried to stop him and took the blow which was intended for Gréor. The lady collapsed and died… Gréor, distraught and unable to live without his beloved, killed himself instantly whilst cursing Alain who was later swallowed up by the Roc…. And ever since, every year at the fatal hour, the bronze bell sleeping under the water rings out and the ancient Roc roars… The Roc claims back its prey whilst, all around, the dogs howl….
Perhap Saint Rô, who no doubt predates this legend, could tell a very different version of the story…
